The lotus flower grows in muddy water and during the day rises above the surface to show its beautiful bloom. As the sun sets, the flower closes and sinks underwater. At dawn it rises again and the flower opens once more. Rising above the muddy water symbolises enlightenment. In addition, as the beautiful flower is untouched by the impurity of the muddy water it grows in, the lotus symbolises purity of heart and mind.
