Zulu Crafters


Zulu Crafters is based in the Zulu Kingdom, Natal in South Africa. The project was established to provide livelihoods in an area where susbsistence farming is the main source of income and unemployment is as high as 80%.

Building on a strong tradition of weaving, the project has provided employment for over 400 people by developing skills in basketwork, beadwork and sewing. Artisans are employed as part of a core group of full-time workers, or on an irregular basis to suit their circumstances, such as attending to family or farmimg responsibilities.

This project has also helped to build a creche for the community, as well as implementing a food scheme and the income that young people earn through the project enables them to put themselves through school.
